Stress: How to fight the number one enemy of your health

Estrés: Cómo combatir al principal enemigo de tu salud

Raise your hand if you feel stressed right now. Sadly, we are almost certain you did. Stress affects us daily and much more than we imagine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hispanic adults in the United States are disproportionately affected by stress compared to non-Hispanic whites (40% vs. 25%, respectively). But beyond the numbers, the biggest problem is that when we experience prolonged states of stress, our entire body suffers.

Consider these facts about stress

The stress response is adaptive and prepares our body to face challenges.

  • Temporary stress: If we face a specific, passing event—such as surgery, an accident, or bad news—the body adapts to minimize the impact and help us recover quickly. This level of stress is normal.
  • Chronic stress: If we live in a state of permanent stress, these bodily adaptations turn into problems that affect us from head to toe.
  • Brain health: Even our neurons change and deteriorate under acute stress, causing alterations in concentration, learning, and memory.
  • Heart health: Stress causes dilation, increases heart rate, raises blood pressure, and leads to sodium retention and high glucose levels.
  • Physical structure: It affects our muscles by tensing them as a form of protection, often leading to chronic pain.
  • Digestive system: Stress alters food transit, digestion, and nutrient absorption, impacting the gut-brain axis.
  • Reproductive health: It interferes with the reproductive system and significantly lowers sexual desire.
  • Weight management: It increases the production of hormones like cortisol, which makes abdominal fat accumulation easier and weight loss more difficult.
  • In short, stress affects every system in the body, including your skin. (1)(2)

  • Create a routine: Establish a daily schedule that includes dedicated time for rest, exercise, and healthy eating.
