Bone health: why calcium is essential for your bones and so much more

You probably know calcium is good for your bones — but you may not realize how much work this mineral is doing for your health every single day. 99% of the body's calcium is stored in bones and teeth, but the remaining 1% supports functions far beyond the skeleton. Understanding what calcium does and how to get enough can make a real difference for your long-term health.

Calcium: far more than bone health

Calcium is essential for muscle contraction and healthy blood flow. It supports hormone release and maintains communication between the brain and other organs. Without enough calcium, many body systems simply can't function properly. (Source: PubMed — Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium)

As a cardiologist, what stands out to me most about calcium is its role in muscle function — and the heart is a muscle. Maintaining adequate calcium levels isn't just about bones: it's part of cardiovascular care too. — Dr. Juan Rivera

It's also especially relevant for women: research has found that calcium supplementation can reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome symptoms, including appetite changes, fatigue, and mood shifts. A clinical study showed that women who took 500 mg of calcium twice daily experienced a significant reduction in these symptoms after twelve weeks, compared to the placebo group.

Calcium and bone density: what matters most as we age

As we get older — especially for women after menopause — the body loses bone density more rapidly. Getting enough calcium at this stage can make an important difference. A landmark study of more than 36,000 postmenopausal women found that those who took 1,000 mg of calcium daily increased hip bone density by 1.06% — a result researchers considered clinically significant, even though it may seem small.

Osteoporosis disproportionately affects women over 50. Adequate calcium, combined with vitamin D and physical activity, remains one of the most evidence-backed strategies for protecting bone health long-term. (Source: NIH NIAMS — Osteoporosis)

How much calcium do you need each day?

Your body doesn't produce calcium — it needs to get it from food or supplements. If it doesn't get enough, it will pull calcium from your bones to keep other systems running. Short-term, that's manageable. Long-term, it leaves bones more fragile and vulnerable.

Here are the current daily recommendations from the National Institutes of Health: (Source: NIH)

  • Ages 1–3: 700 mg/day
  • Ages 4–8: 1,000 mg/day
  • Ages 9–18: 1,300 mg/day
  • Adults 19–50: 1,000 mg/day
  • Women 51–70: 1,200 mg/day
  • Men 51–70: 1,000 mg/day
  • Adults 71+: 1,200 mg/day

One important note: more calcium isn't always better

Excess calcium can accumulate in the body and cause health issues, including kidney stones and, at very high doses, potential cardiovascular effects. The best approach is to assess how much calcium you're already getting from your diet — dairy, leafy greens, almonds, chia seeds — and supplement only what you need to reach your daily target.

Supporting bone health holistically

Calcium is the starting point, but bone health is the result of several factors working together. Magnesio is one of the most overlooked minerals: it works in synergy with calcium for bone and muscle health, and many people don't get enough from diet alone. Cúrcuma provides natural anti-inflammatory support that can help protect joints over time. And for those who also want to support skin and connective tissue structure, our K-Bella Collagen Complex — with VERISOL®, Korean marine collagen, and Tremella mushroom — is a natural addition, since collagen is part of the bone matrix as well as the skin.
