How to Dominate Allergy Season

Cómo Sobreponerse a la Temporada de Alergias

We’re all looking forward to enjoying more time outdoors, but seasonal allergies lessen the appeal. As the weather warms up, molds and pollen blossom. We’re here to help with some ideas to get ahead of allergy season and make the most of your spring and summer.

Fight allergies from the inside

A good supplement can give you a boost. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a hallmark of allergies. One study showed that quercetin reduced respiratory side effects from allergies. You can eat foods rich in quercetin, such as apples and onions, or try a supplement.

Echinacea is another supplement known to reduce inflammation. One month-long study found that adults who consumed echinacea experienced more reduction in inflammation and pain than they did when they took NSAIDs.

Echinacea is also loaded with antioxidants, which protect your body from oxidative stress.

Sometimes the right allergy medicine is just what you need. Diphenhydramine is an effective over-the-counter treatment for allergies because it blocks histamines and other chemicals your body releases in an allergic reaction. You’ll notice that it helps with irritated, watery eyes and an itchy, runny nose.

Minimize your exposure to allergens

Did you know your local weather report includes information about outdoor allergens? The forecast can give you details about the type and amount of allergens in the air. This information can be very useful when planning your outdoor activities.

Try to stay indoors on dry, windy days, and keep the windows closed. You might consider having someone else help with gardening or yard work during peak allergy season. Wearing a dust mask will reduce your exposure when you do have to go outside. (At least we’re all used to masks by now!)

Clean out your nose

A sterile saline rinse of your nasal passages and sinuses (sometimes called nasal irrigation) will go a long way in reducing allergy symptoms. The saltwater solution will wash out allergens and the mucus your nose produces to trap the invaders.

Takeaway

A holistic approach, including lifestyle changes and adding the right combination of supplements and medication, can make a big difference in controlling your allergy symptoms before they take you down.

Let’s stay healthier, together.
