Let's pamper ourselves with nature’s help, because we all want to make a good impression and our image does that - including our skin, hair... even nails. That's why Dr. Juan Rivera teamed up with beauty expert, leading dermatologist Dr. Leyda Bowes, to share suggestions using products readily available.
For the skin:
Skin protects us from environmental toxins while keeping germs at bay. Dr. Bowes stresses that the idea is to take care of the skin from the inside out with the proper diet, vitamins, omega 3, and antioxidants, mainly.
We can also complement that by using products such as resveratrol, which protects against free radicals and stops premature aging.
We must also take care of the exterior. For that, we can resort to the use of some products that we already have at home. (1)
-
Mix a resveratrol capsule with any vegetable oil - just 3 tablespoons of olive or sunflower oil with the contents of the capsule. Blend well and apply the paste to your face, neck, hands, elbows, and knees. Leave it on overnight and remove the next day.
-
The oil helps the resveratrol nutrients better penetrate the skin.
-
The lipids help moisturize the skin.
- To prevent the skin from drying out due to weather or environment, prepare a moisturizing spray using passionflower tea (2). Prepare a regular cup of tea and let it cool. Strain it and add to a spray bottle. Keep it in the refrigerator. Every morning, or whenever you need it, spray some on your face.
- The combination of antioxidants and cold activates circulation, causing the blood vessels in the face to constrict which eliminates redness, puffiness, and bags under the eyes.
For hair:
An abundant and healthy head of hair can be achieved with daily consumption of biotin, which helps the metabolic process of growth and reinforces hair fibers (3). In addition, biotin also helps regenerate skin, nails, and other internal tissues of the body, preventing cells from oxidation (4).
Biotin can be used topically by mixing the contents of a capsule into a hair mask or adding it to your shampoo, for example. This will help moisturize, repair, and prevent hair from falling out.
Here is a hair mask recipe you will love:
Biotin Hair Mask
Ingredients:
-
3 tablespoons coconut oil
-
3 tablespoons corn or vegetable oil
-
1 tablespoon aloe vera
-
1 teaspoon honey
-
Contents of a Biotin capsule
-
Small bottle with applicator
Mix everything together and apply the mask to your hair. Place a plastic cap over and leave on overnight. You can do this daily for a week if your hair is very damaged.
This mixture can also be used on your nails overnight by wearing plastic gloves. This will help strengthen the nails and give them more shine.
For your nails:
Most women dream of strong, long, and healthy nails. But it's hard to achieve. So what can we do to help them grow strong?
A very easy recipe that Dr. Bowes shared with us is a fortified nail mixture using hibiscus tea (5) and turmeric (6). The instructions are simple: brew the hibiscus tea as your normally would and stir in the contents of a turmeric capsule. Let it cool and chill in the refrigerator for a few hours before applying. To use, just dip your fingers in the tea for 5 to 10 minutes.
- The antioxidants in the tea and turmeric help strengthen nails and helps reduce tissue swelling around the nails, especially after a manicure.
Looking and feeling good about our appearance is not something superficial, especially when achieved with the help of nature and all its glorious, generous benefits. Taking care of our image collaborates and boosts our self-esteem. This, in turn, positively impacts our mental health which is a fundamental part of our overall well-being. Pampering yourself from time to time is a basic part of integral self-care.
