We hear and read everywhere about the immune system and the importance of strengthening it, especially now when the coronavirus pandemic seems to be at its peak. Based on what our founder Dr. Juan Rivera informed us about since the beginning of this public health crisis, the first thing we should know is how to identify when we have a repressed or weakened immune system.
According to Dr. Juan, there are 6 signs that indicate what that is. If you are experiencing these symptoms, take immediate steps to make an improvement:
-
Stress level that is too high. Most of us carry this debt – the higher our stress level, the weaker our immunity. Many people are fooled by this symptom because they think if they are not physically ill when under a lot of stress, then everything is fine. However, in times of high stress this does not regularly occur because our entire body is in a state of maximum alert. As soon as that cascade of stress hormones decreases a little, though, we get sick.
-
Constant flu. Having one or two colds a year is normal and does not necessarily mean the immune system is weakened. However, if it becomes a constant, that is undoubtedly an indication that something is wrong with your defense system. This means you are at risk for pathogens taking advantage of your weakened state.
-
Stomach issues. There is a close relationship between discomforts we experience such as irritable colon, poor digestion, heartburn, etc. They are all the indication of an imbalance in the microbiome or intestinal flora, which has a direct link to the body’s immune response. To fortify our defenses, we need to increase the number of good bacteria or probiotics that strengthen it.
-
Delayed wound healing. Just like patients suffering from diabetes, if wounds do not heal properly, it may be a sign of a weak immune system since this is responsible for reacting to tissue injury.
-
Recurrent infections. For example, the use of antibiotics at least twice in a one-year period due to pneumonia, ear infections or bacterial sinusitis. These examples, and other types of infections, are a clear indicator that the body’s defense system are not at their best.
-
Tiredness and permanent fatigue. This can be related to stress, which is also a sign of a weakened immune system. Both symptoms need to be treated in a comprehensive manner to help overcome them.
Here you watch Dr. Juan's explanation:
How can we improve our immune system naturally?
We have a lot of articles about this! Just like you, we are focused on improving our immune response so we can be prepared in the best possible way not only for the eventuality of a coronavirus infection, but also in the face of any threat. That is why we want to remind you how important it is to:
-
Get adequate sleep – between 7 to 8 hours at an appropriately early time to greatly improve the body’s immune response. During sleep, several processes occur that help us achieve this, such as increase in certain cells involved in immunity, as well as the adjustment of hormones involved in inflammation and stress management. -
Keep active – exercising at least 30 minutes every day. Exercise is one of the best all-around medicines. It's good for everything! It has been proven in many studies to have a positive effect on improving immunity when done regularly and moderately. Exercise helps increase blood flow, fortifies muscle tissue, distributes cells and optimizes their functioning, and decreases inflammation and psychological stress, among other benefits. It has even been proven to improve the response to vaccines in at-risk patients. It is so beneficial to people's immunity that it is recommended for the elderly, obese people, and cancer and HIV patients. (2)
-
Eat between 3 to 5 servings of fruits daily. This helps, among other things, to lower inflammation – which is directly related to our body’s immune capacity. Maintaining our diet with fresh produce helps us obtain antioxidants and various compounds essential to carrying out each stage of a healthy immune response, such as lowering the number of inflammatory markers and, instead, increasing the number of immunity cells. Manage stress (4). Check out our blogs to learn how to manage it and which products can lend a helping hand.
-
Consume probiotics. Several studies prove probiotics in yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kombucha, among many others, stimulates the immune system. It increases the production of cells related to the immunity of the intestine, bronchial tubes, and mammary glands, and activates T-cells which are responsible for eliminating foreign invaders from the body. Probiotics also restrict the growth of bad bacteria in the intestine, improving the immune response without increasing inflammation, among other benefits that favor the body’s defense response (5).
-
Consume foods that are rich in vitamin C or supplement it (6).
-
Add other immunoregulatory supplements such as zinc (7), echinacea (8)[s], elderberry (9), and quercetin (10) among others.
Check out our other blogs on how to help strengthen the immune system. Doing this will not only help you decrease your risk of contracting the coronavirus, better cope with it if you become infected, and help you prepare for any other threat to your health and well-being.
