After winter it can feel like we’re coming out of hibernation along with the rest of nature. For many of us, that youthful, spring energy might be lagging behind and still under the covers. We want to share some ideas to help add the pep back into your days.
Get better sleep
When your energy is low, evaluate your sleep. As boring as it sounds, it’s the first line of defense to protect your energy level. Getting to bed and waking up at a consistent time will help you have more energy during the day. Treat yourself to a relaxing evening ritual, such as a bath, and do your best to turn off screens a couple of hours before bedtime. A melatonin supplement may also help.
Watch your sugar intake
When you feel sluggish, you might crave soda, chips, or sweets. Consuming a lot of sugar or simple carbs all at once will quickly raise your blood sugar. You might feel a momentary lift, but once the insulin kicks in to regulate your blood sugar, you’ll suffer the inevitable energy crash. High-fiber and low-sugar meals spread regularly throughout the day will help sustain an even level of blood sugar and get you off the energy roller coaster.
Let supplements help
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you still need help elevating your energy. Here are a few supplements that have energy-giving properties.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 may increase your energy, mood, and concentration—especially if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Regular exercise is part of keeping your energy up, but you want to be sure your blood is getting all that healthy oxygen. Vitamin B12 supports red blood cells, which deliver oxygen to every part of the body. If you’re low on vitamin B12, your vital organs may not be getting enough oxygen, leading to fatigue and weakness.
Maca
Peruvians have used maca root for thousands of years as a key component for their health. It’s a vegetable but, like a potato, the edible part is the root. When dehydrated and put into a supplement, it can contribute to a feeling of vitality.
Women have found that it helps relieve symptoms of menopause and PMS, including hot flashes, irritability, and mood swings. Some studies indicate that maca can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly in post-menopausal women.
What’s more, research has shown that supplementing with maca can increase libido for women and men. In one 12-month study, men who consumed maca reported increased sexual desire by 8 weeks. That’s a great energy booster all by itself.
Ginseng
To increase energy, consider adding ginseng to your supplement regimen. Ginseng has been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The Asian variety of this fleshy root is known for being invigorating. Scientific trials of ginseng indicate that it can reduce fatigue, particularly for people with chronic fatigue. One study found that a dose of ginseng before a sustained mental challenge improved the participants’ performance.
You don’t have to feel stuck in the mud. Boosting your energy level is self-care that will enhance every other aspect of your life. With the potent combination of good health habits and the right supplements, you can get back your bounce.
