Home Remedies: A Shake to Ward Off Fatty Liver

Remedios Caseros: Batido para Combatir el Hígado Graso

Could you imagine someone like Dr. Juan suffering from a health issue like fatty liver? No, we usually think health professionals are immune. But let us tell you that he has fatty liver, sharing it recently on social media. Liver inflammation due to excess fat is more common than we’d like in the Latin community, although many are dangerously unaware of that fact.

While at a personal medical appointment for gallbladder pain, Dr. Juan was surprised to learn he had fatty liver. Certain risk factors like obesity, high blood sugar, and excess alcohol lead to fatty liver – as well as genetic predisposition as in the case of Dr. Juan. For a proper diagnosis, your primary doctor will need to order and ultrasound and lab tests that measure liver enzymes.

What happens next?

Usually fatty liver is not serious, although in some cases it can complicate overall health. Fatty liver can increase the chances of cardiac problems and potentially impact proper functioning of the liver.

As we’ve mentioned before, there is no medicinal treatment for fatty liver. However, you can help control fatty liver by:

  • Losing wight.

  • Regulating blood sugar and insulin resistance.

  • Completing cardio and physical exercise to help control sugar and weight.

Supplements recommended for fatty liver include:

  • Vitamin E, between 800-900 mg daily, can help eliminate excess fat and reduce inflammation. (1)

  • Nopal doesn’t eliminate fat, but it can help lower blood sugar. (2)

  • Red yeast rice can help lower cholesterol. (3)

  • Omega-3 can help decrease inflammation of the liver. (4)

  • Hibiscus tea has been demonstrated in studies to act as an adjuvant in the prevention of fatty liver. (5)

Try this delicious recipe to help control excess fat and liver inflammation:

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups of boiling water

  • 1 satchel of hibiscus tea

  • 1 cup of cubed, ripe fresh or frozen papaya

  • 1 tablespoon of milk thistle

  • Contents of 1 red yeast rice capsule

  • Contents of 1 nopal capsule

Directions:

Prepare the tea in the hot water and allow to cool. Add to the remaining ingredients in a blender and mix until creamy. Add ice or water as desired. Serve and drink immediately.

You can consume this drink once a day. Replace milk thistle with regular tea if unavailable.

How does this help?

These combined ingredients work together to detox the liver. In addition, milk thistle properties are responsible for:

  • Providing nutrition to and protection for the liver and gallbladder.

  • Eliminating toxins.

  • Lower blood glucose.

Milk thistle can do this thanks to a specific protein it carries that promotes the production of glutathione, an antioxidant that protects from inflammation, in the liver. (6)

Papaya is one of the best fruits to support liver health, helping to combat fatty liver with fiber and helpful enzymes such as papain. (7)

In taking care of your liver, you’re taking care of your overall health. Let’s be healthier, together.
